Movie's #62-65- The Indiana Jones quadrilogy
Raiders of the Lost Ark introduces archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) in 1936 and is pitted against a group of Nazis who are searching for the Ark of the Covenant which Adolf Hitler believes will make their army invincible. The scene in the beginning of the film - the one with the giant boulder rolling after Jones - is one of the most memorable film openings in cinematic history. This is my favourite Indiana Jones film and an easy film classic that everyone should have seen already.
The Temple of Doom is a prequel to the first set in 1935. After arriving in India, Indiana Jones is asked by a desperate village to find a mystical stone. He agrees, stumbling upon a Kali-worshipping thuggee cult practicing child slavery, black magic, and ritual human sacrifice. This is probably the worst in the franchise which is a shame but they just went too dark with this one, however even though I think this is the worst in the franchise doesn't make it a bad film, I actually think it's quite good, just not as good as the first.
The Last Crusade is set in 1938. After the mixed reaction to the dark Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg chose to compensate by completing the trilogy with a film lighter in tone. After recovering an ornamental cross and donating it to Marcus Brody's museum, Indiana is introduced to Walter Donovan, who informs him that Indiana's estranged father (Sean Connery) has vanished while searching for the Holy Grail. Again this isn't as good as the first one but its better than the second. The introduction of Indiana's father was one of the best decisions Spielberg and Lucas could have made, it made the film more light hearted in the midst of Nazi take over.
The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is set in 1957. It pays tribute to the science fiction B-movies of the era, pitting Indiana Jones against Soviet agents—led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett)—for a psychic alien crystal skull. Indiana is aided by his former lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and son Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). I like this film with the return of Marion and the introduction of Indy's son but Ford is too old to be playing this role again, he's lost the charm he had in the 80's. However I love the science fiction route they've taken with this film.
